PURCELL -- Chickasaw Nation Governor Bill Anoatubby joined other tribal and local officials for ribbon-cutting ceremonies for the youth center here Tuesday.

The new youth center is designed to provide a safe place for young people to study, participate in activities and spend time with their friends.

Census Department estimates show that almost 7 million children ages 5 to 14 care for themselves on a regular basis, and children and teens are more likely to become victims of violent crime during after-school hours than any other time of day.

"As a parent, a teacher or as a friend, we want to feel secure in the knowledge that our children will be safe from harm," said Chickasaw Nation Governor Bill Anoatubby. "It is a proven fact that after-school programs keep students safe, as well as giving them the opportunities to explore new interests and develop new relationships with other students and caring adults. That is why we are excited to be opening the new Purcell Area Youth Center today."

Activities at the center will focus on study and reading, culture, lifestyles and recreation.

Equipment available includes computers, sports equipment, board games, Sony Playstation 2 systems and a DVD/VCR player.

Other services offered through Chickasaw Nation Youth and Family Services include day care, Head Start, martial arts classes, District Youth Councils, Governors Honor Club and Boys and Girls Clubs.
