Governor Bill Anoatubby presented the Jim Thorpe Award to University of Tennessee safety Eric Berry at The Home Depot ESPNU College Football Awards ceremony last week.
Gov. Anoatubby was chosen to present the award at a ceremony conducted Dec. 10 at the Walt Disney World Resort in Lake Buena Vista, Florida.
The governor was among several former College Football Hall of Fame members who honored current collegiate stand-outs. Other presenters included Lou Holtz, Troy Aikman and Steve Young.
The Jim Thorpe Award for best defensive back in college football was created in 1986 and has been accepted as one of the nation's top collegiate sports honors.
Regarded by many as the greatest athlete of all time, Jim Thorpe was a member of the Sac and Fox tribe. He excelled in professional football, baseball and basketball and earned two Olympic medals, setting records that would go unbroken for decades.
