Make summer memories during summer camps, academies
Remember those summer days of your youth?
For those of us who are members of the "senior" Chickasaw generations, summer time often meant work on the family farm or at the local store. But the season also meant time off from school and the opportunity to experience nature, friends and family.
In today's society, the world turns at a bit faster pace for Chickasaw youth. Expectations are higher and more of our youth want summer experiences that are structured, educational – and fun!
If you are a Chickasaw boy or girl, I hope you will take the time this summer to participate in one of the many Chickasaw Nation camps, clinics and academies. The menu of experiences offers something for everyone.
Our tribal camps include athletics, environment, healthy lifestyles, aviation, engineering, language and more. No matter what your interest, you are sure to find an experience that best fits your desires.
Inside the pages of this issue of the Chickasaw Times, you will find more than 20 camps, clinics and academies from which to choose. All the information is there for you, along with directions and deadlines for application.
Maybe you would like to join other Chickasaw students for Environmental Camp. You will experience many of the fundamental workings of our natural environment and see how your tribe is participating in "green" strategies. You will also visit the National Weather Center in Norman and discover the world of meteorology.
Do you have an interest in flight? Your tribe offers a wonderful camp experience called Chickasaw Nation Aviation and Space Academy. You will learn about the many properties of flight and will have the opportunity to operate a real flight simulator. If you've ever thought you might like to soar, this is the camp for you!
Do you think you're a crack shot? Test your skills with rifle, pistol and bow at Tanumpo Hosa Apisa (Marksmanship Camp). Certified instructors will mentor you in gun safety and proper firing techniques. You will learn how to correctly handle the equipment, and how to improve your shooting prowess. You could end up in the Olympics!
As a young Chickasaw, you surely have thoughts about your tribal culture and heritage. Engage other youth at Chikasha Sayah (I Am Chickasaw), a camp dedicated to Chickasaw history and traditions. You will learn so much about who you are, where your ancestors came from, and what it means to be a Chickasaw in modern society. You will also enjoy great outdoor activities including boating and swimming.
These are just a few of the many experiences available to you this summer. At the Chickasaw Nation, we understand our young people want rich experiences that help them grow. Our youth also like to have fun! Fun is certainly a big part of what you will experience.
Apply for a camp today. If you've been to camp before, you know what a great experience is in store for you. If you've never attended summer camp, apply today! You'll be so glad you did. You will meet lots of new people, and you will make memories that will last a lifetime.
