Justice Mark Holmes Colbert was born September 17, 1957, Sulphur, OK, to Dixie and Ruby Colbert. He has four brothers and one sister. Two brothers have been active as Legislators for the Chickasaw Nation and brother, Tim Colbert, currently serves as a Legislator. He graduated from Missouri University with a B.A. Degree in 1979 and Oklahoma City University with a Juris Doctorate in December, 1982, and has been in private practice doing civil trial work in Ardmore, OK, since May, 1983. He married Kim Colbert in 1983 and has two daughters, Kathryn, who graduated from the University of Oklahoma, and Caroline, who currently attends the University of Oklahoma.
He is a charter member of the Chickasaw Bar Association and was elected to the Chickasaw Supreme Court in 2002. In 2004, the Chickasaw Nation entered into a historic agreement with the United States. The Chickasaw Judicial Department assumed jurisdiction of all pending and future cases of Indians within our tribal borders, and all Chickasaw Citizens. The Supreme Court supervises the Chickasaw Nation District Court that conducted over 1500 hearings last year and the Peacemaking Court that offers parties the opportunity to work out their differences outside a court setting.
He served as Chief Justice during the 2005-2006, 2008-2009, and 2011-2012 terms. He is admitted to practice before the Oklahoma Supreme Court, the United States District Court for the Eastern, Western and Northern Districts of Oklahoma and the Northern District of Texas.
