Background Information
Mrs. McManus is a full blood Chickasaw born and raised in the Kingston and Madill, Oklahoma areas. She moved to Ada, Oklahoma in 1968 and has lived at the same address for the past 38 years.
Mrs. McManus became an employee of the Chickasaw Nation in 1975 when tribal headquarters was located in Sulphur, Oklahoma. She served the Chickasaw people in several capacities in the Community Health Representative Program. She became the Director of Human Resources in 1995 and the Director of Training and Development in 1997. Mrs. McManus served the Nation a total of 24 ½ years before resigning to run for the Chickasaw Tribal Legislature in 1999.
Mrs. McManus served the Tribal Legislature as Secretary in 2002 & 2003, and is currently the Committee Chair of the Human Resources Committee. She is also a member of the Legislative, Finance, Health and Tribal Historical and Cultural preservation Committees. She has also served as a Chickasaw Representative on the Intertribal Council of the Five Civilized Tribes, Board Member of the National Indian Council on Aging and an Alternate Representative of the National Diabetes Association. In 2005, she was appointed an Alternate Delegate to the White House Conference on Aging.
Awards
While serving as the President of the National Association of Community health representatives, she received the Stellar Leadership Award from the Indian Health Service, 1991; received the Excellence in Leadership Award from the Oklahoma Indian Health Service, 1991; recognized for outstanding and dedicated service by the Oklahoma Indian Health Service Community Health Representative Program for the development of the Chickasaw Transportation System, 1993; recognized for outstanding contributions by the National Transit Assistance Program, 1996; recognized for dedicated service to the Teacher Internship Program by the Pontotoc Area Vo-Tech, 1998; recognized for outstanding service as the first President of the Oklahoma Area Association of Community Health Representatives, 2004; and recognized for Outstanding American Indian Elder by the Oklahoma Indian Health Service, 2006.
Goals
Mrs. McManus pledges that she will continue to work for new tribal business ventures; development of a Chickasaw Nation Training and Development Center; legislation and programs to enhance the quality of life for all Chickasaw citizens; and development of a Chickasaw extended care facility and nursing home.
Hobbies
Mrs McManus enjoys reading, traveling and enjoying her family, particularly her 12 grandchildren.
Activities
Mrs. McManus is active in the Ada, Purcell, Oklahoma City and Allen Community Councils. She is a member of the Church of Christ in Galey, Oklahoma.
