New insights on the Chickasaw defeat of French forces in 1736 battles of Ackia and Ogoula Tchetoka will be revealed during presentations set Oct. 18 and 19 in Ada and Sulphur.
Multimedia presentations will be 5:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 18 in the Chickasaw Nation Housing Large Conference Room, 111 Rosedale Rd. in Ada and 2 p.m. Friday, Oct. 19 in the Holisso Research Center at the Chickasaw Cultural Center in Sulphur.
Brad Lieb, from the Chickasaw Nation Department of Homeland Affairs, Professor Chester B. DePratter and Charles Cobb, both of the University of South Carolina will report on a recent archaeological survey in search of the battlefields around Tupelo, Mississippi.
The survey offers a refined understanding of the battles, which have long been the most noted Colonial-era events in Chickasaw history.
This report reconsiders the importance of the alliance between Chickasaws and the English Colony of Carolina in the development of the American frontier.
The National Park Service - American Battlefield Protection Program sponsored the archaeological survey in search of the battlefields around Tupelo, Mississippi, to help develop plans to preserve and interpret the sites.
