The annual Chickasaw Nation Diabetes Camp will be conducted June 6-10 at The Inn at Treasure Valley in Davis, Okla.
Hosted by the Chickasaw Nation Diabetes Care Center, the free camp is designed to educate patients on preventive measures to help control their blood sugar through proper nutrition and exercise.
The deadline for registration is Friday, May 13.
Throughout the week, the campers participate in various activities aimed at educating them about diabetes, including nutrition education, exercise, foot care, dental care, diabetes and the heart, psychosocial aspects of diabetes, smoking cessation and eye care. Blood sugars will be checked at regular intervals each day.
"Our Diabetes Camp is one of several programs designed to provide information on healthier lifestyle choices which may help lower the incidence of diabetes and other illnesses," said Chickasaw Nation Governor Bill Anoatubby.
Diabetes is a disease in which the body does not produce or properly use insulin. Insulin is a hormone that is needed to convert sugar, starches and other food into energy needed for daily life. Type 2 diabetes is the most common type of diabetes among Native Americans. Some complications from diabetes include heart and kidney disease, stroke and eye, foot and skin problems.
The camp welcomes any Chickasaw Nation Division of Health patient. Participants are allowed to bring a guest or family member to the camp. All campers and guests must be over 12 years of age and have a medical consent form signed by their medical provider to attend.
