With a career nearly a half-century in the making, humorous speaker Jeanne Robertson will make her first appearance at the McSwain Theatre in Ada, at 7 p.m., Saturday, Sept. 10.
The Ada date marks the first solo show in Oklahoma for the North Carolina native.
Robertson has been speaking since she was a 19-year-old Miss North Carolina.
She spent the year of her reign giving more than 500 speeches and was hooked.
"I found out I could be funny and when my reign was over, I kept giving speeches and I loved it. I have never looked back it's just what I have always done."
Robertson writes her own family-friendly material that is appropriate for all ages. Her material is based on her life experiences, current events and her travels. These three ingredients help her maintain a fresh and new approach.
The former Miss Congeniality makes sure to keep her content new, but also leaves room to share some of the most popular tales.
"I tell some things the audience has not heard anywhere else during the show."
Her favorite part of performing live is a positive audience reaction.
"When you deliver (your story) and there is a terrific response, there is just nothing like it."
Known for her unique southern style, Robertson speaks to thousands of people annually, specializing in humor based on her life experiences.
For years, her witty speeches have been mostly limited to conventions and meetings that were closed to the general public.
Then technology in the form of satellite radio and You Tube changed her life.
The 67-year-old can be heard daily on Sirius XM Radio on the Laugh USA, Family Comedy and Blue Collar Comedy channels. Her comedy videos on YouTube have "gone viral" with more than 8 million views, including more than 3.5 million for her "Don't Send a Man to the Grocery Store" story.
With six nationally- released DVDs and three books on humor, Robertson is preparing to tape her 7th full-length show later this month, making her one busy grandmother.
She is also the recipient of every top honor in the speaking profession and is a graduate of Auburn University.
She resides in North Carolina with her husband, Jerry, who is a frequent subject of her tales.
Tickets for Jeanne Robertson's show are still available at $30 – Premium, $25 – Regular and $20 – Upper Balcony (top three rows). Special rates are available for groups of 15 or more.
