The third annual "Walking the Park: Stomp out Sexual Assault" awareness walk, hosted by the Chickasaw Nation, will kick off at 10 a.m. Sat. April 9, at Wintersmith Park in Ada.
April is National Sexual Assault Awareness month and to raise awareness locally, the Chickasaw Nation Office of Violence Prevention is inviting everyone to come join a group walk in the park. Water and T-shirts will be provided and the Chickasaw Nation Dance Troupe will demonstrate traditional dance.
National and State statistics show:
- Every two minutes someone in the U.S. is sexually assaulted.
- One in three Native American women suffers sexual assault during their lifetime.
- Sixty percent of sexual assaults are not reported to the police.
- Oklahoma reported more than 1,000 children as victims of sexual assault in 2008.
