Exercise, fun and education were on the agenda of several school-aged Chickasaw students who participated in the Chickasaw Nation After School program, conducted March 29-May 7, 2010.
The six-week program, offered twice a year, focuses on creating opportunities for Chickasaw students ages seven to 13 to learn new skills and knowledge, exercise and develop a healthy lifestyle.
A different activity is planned for each day of the week, including swimming, fitness, martial arts, lessons on culture, nutrition, and trips to Lazer Zone.
A total of 30 kids from around the Ada area took part in the program this spring.
Fifth-grader Jayson Morgan, who has participated in the program for several years, said he looks forward to the After School Program.
"I learned how to make healthy snacks, and I learned new Chickasaw words while playing a game. It is fun."
Jayson always looks forward to the Friday trips to the Chickasaw Nation-owned family fun center, Lazer Zone, in Ada.
Jayson attends the fifth grade at Willard Grade Center in Ada.
Jordan Willis, a third-grader from Homer School, said he has "learned lots about nutrition and stuff," in the program.
Students also heard presentations from the FIRST robotics team and learned about diabetes prevention.
"I am having a good time," said Mekko Postoak, a Homer fifth grader. "It's my first time and I love going to Lazer Zone."
Nine and one-half-year-old Dawson Lyon said she always looks forward to the After School Program. Her favorite part of the program: "Shooting basketballs in the gym."
The After School Program is free of charge and will be offered again in the fall. The hours are 3:30 -5 p.m. Monday through Friday. Admittance is based in first come-first serve basis for Chickasaw citizens and Chickasaw Nation employees' children.
