Dynamic Chickasaw Women featured at Forum, Conference

ADA--Several accomplished Chickasaw women will be featured at the Dynamic Women of the Chickasaw Nation 2009 Forum and Conference Thursday, April 16 at East Central University in Ada, Okla.  Registration begins at 9 a.m. followed by the Opening Session at 9:30.

This year’s event has expanded to a one-day conference. Activities will include special speakers and a writer’s workshop presented by Chickasaw author and Pulitzer Prize finalist Linda Hogan.  An extended art show, "Art of the Chickasaw Woman," will be housed through April 30 in the ECU University Center.

Special sessions will be presented throughout the conference, with topics including The Impact of Professional Native Women, Traditional & Contemporary Native Art and Women’s Health and Total Wellness.

Deanna Hartley-Kelso, Attorney General for the Chickasaw Nation, will be the keynote speaker for the Women’s Luncheon.  The luncheon begins at noon in the East Central University Ballroom.  Tickets are $10 and $7.50 for ECU students and must be purchased by Monday, April 13.

The Dynamic Women of the Chickasaw Nation Forum will begin at 6:30 p.m. at the Estep Multimedia Center.

Featured panelists are Sherry Abbott Todd, Assistant Attorney General for the State of Oklahoma; Dr. Traci Morris, owner of Homahota Consulting LLC and adjunct faculty at Arizona State University; Margaret Roach Wheeler, textile artist and Beulah Shavney, World War II Women’s Army Auxiliary Corps (WAAC) veteran.

This forum is presented annually by the Chickasaw Clemente Humanities Studies program through the Chickasaw Nation Division of Arts and Humanities in partnership with ECU. Its purpose is to salute the valuable contributions, talents and skills of the dynamic women of the Chickasaw Nation.
