Chickasaw Nation Judicial Building, Ada, Oklahoma
Have you considered going into the law profession? Make plans to attend this clinic hosted by the Chickasaw Nation Judicial Branch. The two-day camp will educate youth about the operations of the tribe’s court systems. Students will meet tribal judges and justices, Chickasaw Lighthorse Police officers, Peacemakers and court staff. In addition, students will witness first-hand how the District Court, Supreme Court and Peacemaking Court hear cases. Each student will have the opportunity to play a role in the trial including, but not limited to, prosecutors, defense attorneys, defendants, plaintiffs, jury members of witnesses. One day of camp will focus on the Peacemaking Court. The purpose of the Peacemaking Court is to provide a forum for the use of the traditional Chickasaw Nation methods of peacemaking to resolve disputes and heal relationships. Students will learn the tools of Peacemaking. They will learn to:
- Listen as others tell their stories.
- Listen to others without judgment, criticism, comment or response.
- Resolve disputes using positive values of respect, honor, trust, empathy, forgiveness, empathy, honesty and humility.
- Heal relationships
- Find consensus.
There will be fun events and group activities to emphasize leadership, personal growth and building great friendships. Participants must have transportation to and from the clinic each day.
