Harvest Fest

The Chickasaw White House hosted Harvest Fest Saturday, Oct. 17 at the grounds in Emet, OK.  The event offered attendants the chance to step back into the early 1900s with food and activities planned to exemplify the lives of Chickasaw Nation Governor Douglas H. Johnston and his family.

Chickasaw Nation Horticulture DepartmentThe Chickasaw Nation Horticulture Department was created in March 2002 to offer employment and training opportunities to Chickasaw youth and adults. Under the direction of program director Thalia Miller, the department has expanded from a single-bay greenhouse to a dual-bay greenhouse, a raised garden and a traditional garden. The department has a staff of 10 full-time adults and 12 summer youth with 6 working year-round.

From the greenhouses and gardens come a wide variety of products: beautiful cut flowers, fresh vegetables and hanging baskets. According to local grocers, the peppers grown in the gardens are "the hottest in Ada." In addition, the horticulture department features a landscaping business that is responsible for landscaping many of the Chickasaw Nation's properties. Donations for special occasions, such as meetings, are also provided.

In addition to employment experience gained by summer youth workers, they also gain valuable knowledge through etiquette classes, cultural activities, arts and crafts, and guest speakers.
