May is Mental Health Awareness Month

Date: May 12, 2026

In 2022, Governor Bill Anoatubby declared May to be Chikasha Anokfilli or “Thinking Chickasaw” month throughout the Chickasaw Nation. This declaration is honored annually alongside Mental Health Awareness Month, but the mindset of Chikasha Anokfilli is embraced throughout the year.

Mental health includes our emotional, psychological and social well-being. It enables us to cope with the stresses of life and contribute to our communities. Mental wellness can directly impact our physical health, relationships and our sense of purpose. When we notice our thoughts turning negative or we feel unlike ourselves, it is a sign to check in — not just for our minds but for our overall well-being.

Struggling with mental health is more common than you might think. According to 2024 data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 1 in 8 American adults regularly reported feelings of worry, nervousness or anxiety, and 1 in 20 regularly reported feelings of depression. Discussing our mental health can seem deeply personal but talking with someone you trust can be a powerful first step. If you feel you need more professional support, help is always available.

The Chickasaw Nation offers several resources, like counseling for individuals, couples and families, confidential therapy services and more.

Every mental wellness journey is unique and valid. Being proactive about your mental health is a sign of strength and an investment in your future.
