This program provides storm shelters for privately owned homes of Chickasaw citizens.
Required application is available at the Housing Administration office. An applicant can expect to find out within 10 business days if he/she qualifies to be placed on the waiting list.
For citizens at large, grants will be provided for up to $2,500 for installation of storm shelters.
The storm shelters are two prefab concrete pieces that are joined and sealed before installation. Installation generally takes half to one day.
The units measure 6 ft. by 8 ft. and can easily hold 10 to 12 people. There are two air vents on top and a heavy-duty metal door.
The shelters have metal steps and hand rail entrances. The elderly and/or handicapped persons may require assistance in entering the shelter. If an elder and/or handicapped person will get disability confirmation from their medical doctor, they could be eligible for an above-ground (safe room) shelter.
Registration: During a storm, debris may cover your storm shelter, making it difficult for emergency workers to find you if you are in your shelter. Registering your storm shelter allows emergency personnel to quickly locate you after a storm.
To register your storm shelter, please complete the storm shelter registration form.
